Upper Hutt school locked down over gun scare
An Upper Hutt school north of Wellington was locked down this afternoon after a teacher spotted a man with a gun on the school grounds.
Police communications Senior Sergeant Martin Tunley said a teacher at Heretaunga College saw a man on the grounds holding what looked to be a firearm just after 2.30pm.
She immediately ensured all students and staff were inside and called police, Tunley said.
A second teacher had also sighted the male.and of solid build.
Students were released from the school an hour later after a man was found at a nearby address and a gun located.
Tunley said the weapon turned out to be a BB gun or air rifle.
